About Running City

Running City is a city-wide quest — sort of like a scavenger hunt — that takes participants to interesting locations across London.
  • Goal:
    Participants will follow designated routes to interesting locations all across the city. At each point along the route, there are fun tasks that test your attention to detail. There are prizes for the fastest teams in timed categories!

  • Teams:
    Each team can have up to four members. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. You'll need to registed your team in advance.

  • Routes:
    Despite our name, you won't have to run - Running City is mostly about walking at a relaxed pace and having frequent breaks at local cafes. In some categories teams are allowed to use public transport as well. This is a whole day event: while some teams may prefer to finish early, it usually takes about 8 hours between start and finish.

  • Starting Time:
    Teams have designated start times between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. - you'll pick yours upon registration and can always double check it in the confirmation email. Register early to get an earlier start!

  • Registration Fee:
    The registration fee is ~£30 per team (our payment system and pricing is set in Russian rubles, so the exact amount you pay depends on the exchange course on the day: you will be charged 2500 rubles). This includes all printed materials for the team, souvenirs for each team member, and prizes for the winning teams in timed categories.
Categories
Lion

Lion Mini
(Light Walking)
A shorter distance for those looking to get the best parts of the Lion course without doing too much walking. No running or using transport of any kind is allowed. Some of the points you'll need to visit will be given as riddles, but most will be plain addresses.
The course is NOT timed.

Time: ~4-5 hours
Distance: ~6 miles

Sphinx
(Riddles)
Instead of an address, every point you need to visit is given to you as a riddle, puzzle or charade - you have to solve it before you can move forward. The more you solve - the better.
Points can be rather far away for each other, so teams are allowed to use public transport.
The course is timed.

Time: ~10 hours
Distance: ~20 miles

Registered: 20 teams
Atlas
(Transport)
Perfect category for transport geeks. Find the fastest way to visit as many points as you can using London's extensive public transport network. Santander bikes, Citymapper rides and other means of transport that don't accept Oyster cards aren't allowed.

Running City is a competitive game, therefore all participants must follow the rules to make it a pleasant experience for everyone.
READ THE RULES
What to bring with you
For all teams:
  • City map — in any form you like, be it a smartphone app, a GPS navigator or a paper map (if you will be using a device of any kind, consider also bringing a charger or a power bank);

  • Pen or pencil— to write down your answers;

  • Photo ID for all participants over 18 (anyone younger must be accompanied by an adult) — just in case we happen to lead you to a pub along the way :)
For teams that will be solving riddles:
  • Device with internet access (ideally, one device per team member) — you probably won't know everything that you need to solve the riddles, but you can look it up! Phones work fine, but hardcore participants bring laptops along as well.

  • A charger or a portable power bank (maybe two) — to ensure that your devices don't run out of battery;

You can still solve riddles without all the above, but that will make the experience much smoother and easier.

Project History
The Running City project is the largest international city
orienteering competition. Since the inaugural event in Russia in 2000, the city games have been held regularly in cities across Europe and North America, including London, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Barcelona, and New York.

This is the third year of Running City in London: we've already had routes going through Soho, Bloomsbury, Angel, City, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, South Kensington and Notting Hill, and last year we had over 200 participants from more that 5 countries.
